Sore Throat Q & A

Why do I have a sore throat?

A sore throat can stem from many issues, not all of which mean you’re sick. If you have a sore throat, whether it’s minor or severe, it may be caused by:

  • Viral infections, like a cold or flu
  • Bacterial infections, as with strep throat
  • Outdoor or indoor pollution, like secondhand smoke
  • Allergies, including pet dander, molds, and pollen
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

Your sore throat may also be linked to dry indoor air, which is common when you have the heat going during the winter months.

When should I see a doctor for a sore throat?

The caring providers at Cima Medical Centers encourage you to schedule an evaluation if you (or your child) has a sore throat that’s persistent or hasn’t improved after a couple of days. It’s particularly important to come in as soon as possible if you experience:

  • Fever
  • Coughing
  • Runny nose
  • Postnasal drip
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Nausea or vomiting

You should also come into Cima Medical Centers if you experience allergy symptoms, including itching, watery eyes, or rashes. With on-site laboratory testing available, your practitioner can run some labs to get to the root of why you’re experiencing a sore throat, so you can quickly get started on a pain-relieving treatment.

What is the treatment for a sore throat?

Treating a sore throat often involves combining several different types of therapies. For instance, it’s helpful to breathe in moist air, like with a humidifier, especially if you’re stuck indoors during cold months with the heat on. Your dedicated provider at Cima Medical Centers may also recommend:

  • Throat lozenges
  • Warm salt water gargle
  • Over-the-counter pain medications
  • Antibiotics (for bacterial infections only)
  • Prescription-strength cough medicine

If your provider determines that allergies cause your sore throat, they may recommend expanded laboratory or skin testing to determine which allergies affect you. Your doctor can prescribe antihistamine medications or immunotherapy treatments to help you get relief from ongoing sore throat issues.
